RIRUG w/ John Sawers: Your Emotional API

It's about time! I'll talk about some highlights from RubyConf, and we'll be joined by John Sawers from Boston to talk about integrating with a new API -- the Emotional API.

"Being a good developer isn't just about slinging code; we're part of a community. Interacting with others in a community means feelings are involved. But feelings are messy and uncomfortable, so why can't you just ignore them? Because emotional skills are critical for working well on a team, and for writing code every day. In this talk, you’ll learn how emotions are affecting you by modeling them as an API and looking at the code."

Also, PVD's own Ryan Laughlin will talk about his Checkup concept he's been using at Splitwise -- a way to run tests and detect errors that are specific to a production environment.

Other topics are welcome, so let me know if you'd like to share something as well.

Food and beverage will be provided. Let's chat!

Intro to React: Two-Day Professional's Workshop and Training at MojoTech Boulder

Join MojoTech Boulder for a two-day professional's workshop that will show you how to use React to develop real-world applications — not just another TodoMVC app.

Companies like Toyota, Walmart, Salesforce and many, many more are flocking to use React and its surrounding ecosystem because it offers developers a rich set of tools for building front-end applications in a manner that allows you to reason about application state and take advantage of unidirectional data flow.

Presentations by seasoned React developers will be followed by hands-on exercises and pairing whereby you will learn the "how" and "why" of React web development.

Session topics include:

• What is React and why would you use it?

• Webpack fundamentals, JSX fundamentals

• Redux/APIs/Entities

• Testing, Storyboard, Reselect, Router, and more

• React Native (migrating to React)

At the end of the two days we'll celebrate against the backdrop of the Boulder Flatirons with drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and many cheers!

RSVP and more info: [Link coming -- Stay tuned!]

**You must RSVP and pay via Eventbrite to confirm your spot in the workshop.**

Observer Driven Development with Elixir (and Omid!)

A couple of months ago Omid Bachari gave us the low down on Elixir, which he used to build upon the RIPTA API. Omid is back and this time he's got a pretty big announcement.

Omid will be presenting at Elixir Daze in March and we're getting a sneak peek of his presentation, Observer Driven Development with Elixir. Everyone is welcome, whether you've dabbled in Elixir or not. What's more, we'll have DISCOUNT CODES for anyone interested in escaping the New England cold and going to Orlando in March!

Pizza and drinks, as always. See you there!

P.S. If anyone has any suggestions for presentation topics, or ideas for our next big symposium (remember the React Symposium last July?) shoot me a message! I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Revolutionizing RIPTA @ MojoTech with Hack(RI)

RIPTA recently released their Open Data Transit API and Hack(RI), in partnership with Governor Raimondo's CS4RI initiative, is challenging YOU to come up with revolutionary applications using RIPTA's data!

To get the ball rolling, Hack(RI), the official hackathon for the state of Rhode Island, is hosting a series of Meetups where hackers of all levels can work on their projects and listen to short talks by members of the RI Tech community!

Join us at MojoTech on Wednesday, November 16th to hack and hear from Mojos Tim Barmann and Omid Bachari who have been working on separate back-end projects that build upon the RIPTA API. Their goal is to provide additional API endpoints that would make front-end development easier. Tim is working in Node JS and Omid is working in Elixir. They will share their work.

Pizza, refreshments, and plenty of work space. More info about Hack(RI) and future Meetups here.

Ruby Meetup x MojoTech

Last time we talked about React, this time, let's chat about Ruby! MojoTech will be hosting the Rhode Island Ruby User Group for a one-night event.

A lot has happened in the Ruby world lately. Rails 5 is out, some very compelling Rails alternatives and strategies are on the rise, and we're all dipping our brains into other non-Ruby stuff a lot of the time too.

We'll be visited by Piotr Solnica (@solnic) to talk about (awesomeness TBD), and we'll get all functional in Ruby with Omid Bachari and RuboClaus  (https://github.com/mojotech/rubo_claus).

If anyone has something they'd like to talk about lightning-talk-style, tweet at @rirug or drop a note in Slack (https://rirug.slack.com/).

Details: Monday, September 19th from 6 PM to 8 PM at the MojoTech office.  We don't have free parking available, but we do plan to have free pizza and beer.  People at any and every skill level are welcome and encouraged to attend and ask questions!

You can RSVP via MojoTech Meetups or RIRUG HERE
