Code & Coffee (Bring Laptop!)

Do you like coding with friends? Like really great coffee? Come out to GDI's Code & Coffee!

Code and Coffee is an opportunity for you to work on your own projects, continue practicing what you've been learning, and meet others who share your interests. Bring your laptop, your recent projects, and your programming problems and questions.

This is also a great event for first time attendees who just want to socialize or find out more about coding in general. We're very friendly and would love to have you join us. :)

If you have a project idea and some skills, but haven’t attended a GDI event yet? Want to focus on helping others with their projects? You're welcome too!

Don't worry if you don't have a project already started. This could be an opportunity to find one.

As a group, we’ll hold each other accountable for completing our projects, and provide on-going support and feedback.

We know that it can be intimidating to come to a meet-up when you don't know anyone, so please feel free to reach out if you have any questions! : )

Feel free to come by for the whole thing or drop in when you have time.

Don't forget to bring your laptop and charger if you have one!

All attendees are expected to abide by the Girl Develop It code of conduct

Book Club: Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit

For this book club meet up, we will be reading Men Explain Things to Me by Rebecca Solnit (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18528190-men-explain-things-to-me).

Description:

"In her comic, scathing essay “Men Explain Things to Me,” Rebecca Solnit took on what often goes wrong in conversations between men and women. She wrote about men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don’t, about why this arises, and how this aspect of the gender wars works, airing some of her own hilariously awful encounters.

She ends on a serious note— because the ultimate problem is the silencing of women who have something to say, including those saying things like, “He’s trying to kill me!”

This book features that now-classic essay with six perfect complements, including an examination of the writer Virginia Woolf ’s embrace of mystery, of not knowing, of doubt and ambiguity, a highly original inquiry into marriage equality, and a terrifying survey of the scope of contemporary violence against women."

------------------------------------------------------------------

Pick up the book and come by to share your own experiences, ask questions, and discuss the things you learned.

Book Club: Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality...

For this book club meet up, we will be reading Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy by Cathy O'Neil (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28186015-weapons-of-math-destruction).

Description:

"A former Wall Street quant sounds an alarm on mathematical modeling—a pervasive new force in society that threatens to undermine democracy and widen inequality.

Tracing the arc of a person’s life, from college to retirement, O’Neil exposes the black box models that shape our future, both as individuals and as a society. Models that score teachers and students, sort resumes, grant (or deny) loans, evaluate workers, target voters, set parole, and monitor our health—all have pernicious feedback loops. They don’t simply describe reality, as proponents claim, they change reality, by expanding or limiting the opportunities people have. O’Neil calls on modelers to take more responsibility for how their algorithms are being used. But in the end, it’s up to us to become more savvy about the models that govern our lives. This important book empowers us to ask the tough questions, uncover the truth, and demand change."

Book Club: Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One

For this book club meet up,  we will be reading Pivot: The Only Move That Matters Is Your Next One by Jenny Blake.

Description:

"Jenny Blake, author of Life After College and former career development program manager at Google, reveals how to methodically make your next career move by doubling down on what is already working. This book is for anyone searching for an answer to the question, "What's next?" Whether you have hit a plateau in your perfect-on-paper job, are considering taking on a new role in your current job, are thinking about starting your own business, or you want to move into a new industry altogether, one thing remains clear: your career success depends on your ability to determine your next best move.

If change is the only constant, let’s get better at it."

Book Club: Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future

For this book club meet up,  we will be reading Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future by Martin Ford.

Description:

"What are the jobs of the future? How many will there be? And who will have them? We might imagine—and hope—that today's industrial revolution will unfold like the last: even as some jobs are eliminated, more will be created to deal with the new innovations of a new era. In Rise of the Robots, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Martin Ford argues that this is absolutely not the case. As technology continues to accelerate and machines begin taking care of themselves, fewer people will be necessary. Artificial intelligence is already well on its way to making “good jobs” obsolete: many paralegals, journalists, office workers, and even computer programmers are poised to be replaced by robots and smart software. As progress continues, blue and white collar jobs alike will evaporate, squeezing working- and middle-class families ever further. At the same time, households are under assault from exploding costs, especially from the two major industries—education and health care—that, so far, have not been transformed by information technology. The result could well be massive unemployment and inequality as well as the implosion of the consumer economy itself.

In Rise of the Robots, Ford details what machine intelligence and robotics can accomplish, and implores employers, scholars, and policy makers alike to face the implications. The past solutions to technological disruption, especially more training and education, aren't going to work, and we must decide, now, whether the future will see broad-based prosperity or catastrophic levels of inequality and economic insecurity. Rise of the Robots is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand what accelerating technology means for their own economic prospects—not to mention those of their children—as well as for society as a whole"

Book Club: Bad Feminist

For this book club meet up, we will be reading Bad Feminist.

Description:

"A collection of essays spanning politics, criticism, and feminism from one of the most-watched young cultural observers of her generation, Roxane Gay.

“Pink is my favorite color. I used to say my favorite color was black to be cool, but it is pink—all shades of pink. If I have an accessory, it is probably pink. I read Vogue, and I’m not doing it ironically, though it might seem that way. I once live-tweeted the September issue.”

In these funny and insightful essays, Roxane Gay takes us through the journey of her evolution as a woman (Sweet Valley High) of color (The Help) while also taking readers on a ride through culture of the last few years (Girls, Django in Chains) and commenting on the state of feminism today (abortion, Chris Brown). The portrait that emerges is not only one of an incredibly insightful woman continually growing to understand herself and our society, but also one of our culture.

Bad Feminist is a sharp, funny, and spot-on look at the ways in which the culture we consume becomes who we are, and an inspiring call-to-arms of all the ways we still need to do better."

Intro to ES6 JavaScript

Getting Started with ES6 JavaScript

If you've programmed in JavaScript, you've likely been coding in ES5. But there's a new release in town: ES6. The ES6 release is a radical jump forward for the language. It's hailed for its readability, flexibility, and exciting new features that will make your code cleaner, more scalable, easier to read, faster, and more professional.

Using ES6 will impress your fellow coders and interviewers. It also gives you an edge in the web development industry, since it's used heavily in popular modern frameworks such as React.js, Angular 2, and Vue.js.

Through hands-on coding exercises, we'll use ES6 in practical, everyday situations and reformat old ES5 JavaScript to its nice new ES6 format. We'll also talk about ES7, a minor release that contains even more helpful features. If you haven’t learned ES6 yet, this is your chance.

Dates

This class takes place over the following dates:

Saturday, April 8th, 12:30 - 3:30 pm

Saturday, April 15th, 12:30 - 3:30 pm

Your payment registers you for the entire series.

Takeaways

• Learn ES6 syntax through hands-on coding exercises

• Work with the major new features of ES6 (including new variable types, Array helpers, arrow functions, string templates, generators, promises, classes, rest/spread operators, and more!)

• Convert legacy ES5 code into ES6, step by step

• Write organized, more professional JavaScript that's easier for other developers to read and understand

• Review ES7's two new features

• Discuss how to integrate ES6 into existing projects or start new ES6 projects from scratch

• Learn about tools that will help you and your team reinforce best JavaScript practices

• Never use a for loop again!

Prerequisites

A working understanding of JavaScript is required. You should be familiar with basic JavaScript syntax, functions, objects and arrays, conditionals, for and while loops, AJAX requests, and handling JSON responses.

If you have any questions about requirements, please post a comment or message the organizers. We're happy to help!

Note: All attendees are expected to abide by the Girl Develop It Code of Conduct.

Hack(RI) - Beginner friendly hackathon!

First things first, YOU MUST REGISTER ON THE Hack(RI) REGISTRATION PAGE! Signing up through on our meetup page won't register you for the event. (I know, it's a little annoying. But we wanted our members to know about this awesome event!)

What is Hack(RI)?

Hack(RI) is Rhode Island's first official Hackathon!  Want to learn how to code, but don't know where to start? If you're curious, this is the place to be!

Join almost 200 hundred Rhode Islanders as we create teams and work on projects throughout the weekend!

In the Hack(RI) workshops, you'll advance your skills- whether it's your first time coding, of if you're a seasoned pro.

Hackathons are friendly events and are great ways for beginners to learn how to code. For our intermediate-to-advanced members, it's a great way to showcase your talents, and share your knowledge.

Also if you're looking to seek new employments opportunities, several of the state's largest employers will be on hand.

Dates & Times

• Fri, Dec 2nd 5pm - 10pm

• Sat, Dec 3rd 8am - 10pm

• Sun, Dec 4th 8am - 5pm

• Don't worry if you can't make all the days & times, just make sure to communicate it to your team, and you guys can work it out from there. This is an inclusive event and we everyone to participate!

In case you're wondering, "What is a hackathon?"

Hackathons provide a venue for self-expression and creativity through technology. People with (and without) technical backgrounds come together, form teams around a problem or idea, and collaboratively code a unique solution  — these generally take shape in the form of websites, mobile apps, and/or robots. Come join us!

Don't Forget:

Remember you must RSVP at www.HackRI.com in order to attend this meetup/hackathon. HackRI T-shirts, food, coding lessons, mentors and swag will be available for all in attendance.

Book Club: Feminist Fight Club

For this book club meet up, we will be reading Feminist Fight Club

Description from the publisher:

"It was a fight club—but without the fighting and without the men. Every month, the women would huddle in a friend’s apartment to share sexist job frustrations and trade tips on how best to tackle them. Once upon a time, you might have called it a consciousness-raising group. But the problems of today’s working world are more subtle, less pronounced, harder to identify—and harder to prove—than those of our foremothers. These women weren’t just there to vent. They needed battle tactics. And so the Feminist Fight Club was born.

In Feminist Fight Club, acclaimed journalist Jessica Bennett blends the personal stories of her real-life fight club with research, statistics, and no-bullsh*t advice for how to combat today’s sexism (and come out the other side). Part manual, part manifesto, Bennett offers a new vocabulary for the sexist archetypes women encounter every day—such as the Manterrupter, who talks over female colleagues in meetings; or the Bropropriator, who appropriates their ideas—as well as the self-sabotaging behavior women sometimes exhibit themselves. With original illustrations and fascinating historical research as well as a straightforward assessment of the gender gap that continues to plague the American workforce, Feminist Fight Club offers practical strategies, stealthy hacks, and much-needed camaraderie for women battling their way through the modern workplace."

Book Club: Unlocking the Clubhouse

For this book club meet up, we will be reading Unlocking the Clubhouse: Women in Computing by Jane Margolis.

Description from the publisher:

"The information technology revolution is transforming almost every aspect of society, but girls and women are largely out of the loop. Although women surf the Web in equal numbers to men and make a majority of online purchases, few are involved in the design and creation of new technology. It is mostly men whose perspectives and priorities inform the development of computing innovations and who reap the lion's share of the financial rewards. As only a small fraction of high school and college computer science students are female, the field is likely to remain a "male clubhouse," absent major changes.

In Unlocking the Clubhouse, social scientist Jane Margolis and computer scientist and educator Allan Fisher examine the many influences contributing to the gender gap in computing. The book is based on interviews with more than 100 computer science students of both sexes from Carnegie Mellon University, a major center of computer science research, over a period of four years, as well as classroom observations and conversations with hundreds of college and high school faculty. The interviews capture the dynamic details of the female computing experience, from the family computer kept in a brother's bedroom to women's feelings of alienation in college computing classes. The authors investigate the familial, educational, and institutional origins of the computing gender gap. They also describe educational reforms that have made a dramatic difference at Carnegie Mellon -- where the percentage of women entering the School of Computer Science rose from 7% in 1995 to 42% in 2000 -- and at high schools around the country."

Book Club: The Filter Bubble: What the Internet is Hiding From You

For this book club meet up, we will be reading The Filter Bubble: How the New Personalized Web Is Changing What We Read and How We Think. There are a few hard copies and an book on CD copy available from the RI library system.

Description from the publisher:

"The hidden rise of personalization on the Internet is controlling--and limiting--the information we consume. In 2009, Google began customizing its search results. Instead of giving you the most broadly popular result, Google now tries to predict what you are most likely to click on. According to MoveOn.org board president Eli Pariser, this change is symptomatic of the most significant shift to take place on the Web in recent years--the rise of personalization. Thoughthe phenomenon has gone largely undetected until now, personalized filters are sweeping the Web, creating individual universes of information for each of us. Data companies track your personal information to sell to advertisers, from your political leanings to the hiking boots you just browsed on Zappos. In a personalized world, we will increasingly be typed and fed only news that is pleasant, familiar, and confirms our beliefs--and because these filters are invisible, we won't know what is being hidden from us. Our past interests will determine what we are exposed to in the future, leaving less room for the unexpected encounters that spark creativity, innovation, and the democratic exchange of ideas."

HackPVD!

YOU MUST REGISTER ON THE HackPVD REGISTRATION PAGE! Signing up through on our meetup page won't register you for the event.

We are excited to partner with HackPVD!

Have you ever participated in a Hackathon?! If not, and if you're curious here is your chance to come out and give it a shot:)

So you might as yourself, "What is a hackathon?" Here is a good explanation:

"Hackathons provide a venue for self-expression and creativity through technology. People with (and sometimes without) technical backgrounds come together, form teams around a problem or idea, and collaboratively code a unique solution from scratch — these generally take shape in the form of websites, mobile apps, and/or robots."

About HackPVD

The City of Providence is eager to create sustainable change within government. We’re hoping, by joining forces with our extremely talented, intelligent, and passionate citizens, that we can identify blockers and propose meaningful solutions to make Providence a better place to Live, Work, and Play… which is why we’ve developed HackPVD: a 3-day hackathon to challenge city processes and create strategic, attainable change.

Book Club: The Only Woman in the Room: Why Science Is Still a Boys' Club

For our first book club meet up, we will be reading The Only Woman in the Room: Why Science Is Still a Boys' Club by Eileen Pollack. There are a few hard copies and an electronic copy available from the RI library system.

Description from the publisher:

"Eileen Pollack had grown up in the 1960s and 70s dreaming of a career as a theoretical astrophysicist. Denied the chance to take advanced courses in science and math, she nonetheless made her way to Yale, where, despite finding herself far behind the men in her classes, she went on to graduate, summa cum laude, with honors, as one of the university's first two women to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. And yet, isolated, lacking in confidence, starved for encouragement, she abandoned her ambition to become a physicist. Years later, Pollack revisited her reasons for walking away from the career she once had coveted. She spent six years interviewing her former teachers and classmates and dozens of other women who had dropped out before completing their degrees in science. In addition, Pollack talked to experts in the field of gender studies and reviewed the most up-to-date research that seeks to document why women and minorities underperform in STEM fields. Girls who study science and math are still belittled and teased by their male peers and teachers, even by other girls. They are led to think that any interest or achievement in science or math will diminish their popularity. They are still being steered away from advanced courses in technical fields, while deeply entrenched stereotypes lead them to see themselves as less talented than their male classmates, a condition that causes them to fulfill such expectations and perform more poorly than the boys sitting beside them."
