June Geek Dinner

It’s well-known that Boulder Colorado-headquartered SendGrid is one of the most successful tech startups of the past decade. The email delivery service helps clients send over 7 billion emails per month.

So far though, few folks realize that SendGrid’s new R&D arm — SendGrid Labs — is based in Providence. Last year, when SendGrid recruited Native RI’er & technology veteran Mike Rowan to build and lead Labs, they told him could locate the team wherever he wanted. To the local tech scene’s delight, Mike choose our fair city.

At the June Geek Dinner, Mike is going to tell the SendGrid Labs story, demo one of its projects, and explain why he thinks Providence has only begun to tap its potential as a technology center.

The Visual Language of Herbert Matter
Herbert Matter was a man who seemingly fit many lives into one by excelling in the creative disciplines of design, photography and film. The documentary The Visual Language of Herbert Matter profiles his extraordinary life and seminal work. With the help of historical footage, vintage photographs, never-before-seen film excerpts (some shot by Matter himself) and a broad overwiew of his extensive body of work, the feature length documentary helps in bringing the picture of an almost forgotten creative genius back into focus. Interwoven with interviews from a whos who list of legendary artists, designer and photographers, the film sheds light on a remarkable career and its impact on the evolving language of design during the short 20th century both in the USA and Europe. Herbert Matter was an AIGA medalist in 1983. www.herbertmatter.net

RWU Senior Design Showcase

Greetings all!

I am teaching portfolio class for the first time at RWU, after developing the program at my last institution. I want to get LOTS of local professional representation in the room (and really impress my students and the powers that be:). Please stop by at any time, especially after work to view their books. PLUS Heavy hors d'ouvres both sweet and savory!

Also am looking for anyone who can come to campus earlier in the day to formally review the work. I have a review sheet and anticipate (or kindly ask) that reviewers spend no more than 20 minutes with each book (students will not be present) writing responses to a questionnaire that I have prepared. There are 18 students and ideally I want them to have 2 formal comment sheets each at a minimum. If I only have 2 reviewers that will be logistically difficult. But, if you have an hour or more to spare that day I would love your help. I will also be providing lunch for those who participate in the review either as a bag lunch or we will go to the dining hall which has an amazing selection (top 2% of college dining services).

Please send me an email at vsloan@rwu.edu if you are interested.

P.S. you will notice that I set the time for this event at 5. It is an open reception from 3:30-7:30 so come at any time and stay as long as you can. If you can be a reviewer, that could start as early as 9/9:30am.

THANK YOU!!

April Geek Dinner featuring Knowyo

The evening will feature Providence-based startup Knowyo, fresh off their win (“Best Presentation”) at last month’s LAUNCH Conference in San Francisco.

Knowyo will help you to never forget a name again. Their web and mobile-based adaptive learning platform integrates with LinkedIn (and soon corporate social networks like Yammer) to enable you to quickly and enjoyably learn the names and faces of the people you need to know.

At this Wednesday’s Geek Dinner, Co-Founders CEO Elie Schoppik and CTO Andrew Sohn will tell their startup’s story, demo Knowyo, and give a sneak peek of what’s coming next.

As always, for first-timers here are the details on the Geek Dinners:

  • The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant.
  • Doors open at 5:30pm. Socializing, eating and drinking up until the 30 min presentation/q&a around 6:30pm. Afterwards, back to socializing, eating, drinking…
  • It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whoever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities (that’s not say the food isn’t good – it’s actually great)
  • Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about AJAX, mash-ups, start-ups, new devices, innovative business models, interaction design, social computing, digital art, web services, etc. etc. etc.
  • There is Wi-Fi so bring your connected device of choice.

Xander Marro and Just Like Being There

Join us for a presentation by Xander Marro followed by Just Like Being There a documentary about gig posters.

About the Presenter:
XANDER MARRO | Xander Marro is one of the founders of the Dirt Palace a feminist art collective in Providence, and a former managing director for AS220. Her work has been included in MoMA's book Modern Women, the 2010 deCordova Biennial, and in RISDs Wunderground exhibit which included over 2000 screen-printed posters for performances, art exhibitions, and community events held in Providence from 19952006. The Boston Globe named Xander Marro an artist to watch in 2012. Her work includes installations, posters, zines, performance, and film. xandermarro.com

About the documentary:
JUST LIKE BEING THERE | In the gig poster community, artists such as Daniel Danger and Jay Ryan prove that creating artwork is a way of life, more than just a career. These artists are at the forefront of an expansion of the gig poster genre. MONDOs reinvigoration of the film poster as an art form, and Gallyer 1988s theme based exhibits are only two ways in which this artwork is reaching a greater public. In a community with strong roots, dating back to the 1960s, this expansion is controversial refreshing to some, sacrilegious to others. justlikebeingtheremovie.com
