October Geek Dinner

After selling BantamLive – a Social CRM that he co-founded in NYC – to Constant Contact in 2011, Alex Turnbull had unfinished business in the customer service software industry.

So he founded a new company — Groove. This time though the startup would be based in his native RI — Newport to be exact. On his second time at bat, Alex and the Groove team have created a simple ticketing and knowledge base app aimed specifically at eCommerce and SaaS businesses. Along the way they also proven themselves to be expert “growth hackers”. Launched just a couple of weeks ago, their latest inbound marketing effort — “A SaaS Startup’s Journey to $100,000 a Month” — will publicly document their goal of going from 28K to100K in monthly revenue over the next year. It already has hit 10,000 views.

At the October Geek Dinner this coming Wednesday, Groove’s CEO, Alex and Head of Customer Success, Adam Pennacchio will tell their startup’s fascinating story, introduce you to the Groove platform, and give you a peek at where they’re headed next.

Write your own Google Hangout with HTML5 and WebRTC

Google Hangouts is an easy-to-use video chat service from Google. I happen to like it. You and 9 of your friends can have a live video call, exchange messages, send photos and even share a whiteboard. On the other hand, some people hate it. Perhaps its too slow, or the plugin wont run, or they dont like the UI, or theyre just Google haters. Whatever the reasons, quit complaining and take matters into your own hands with HTML5 and WebRTC.

Tim Eagan will give an introduction to the JavaScript WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) API its uses and how you can add it to your latest project.

September Geek Dinner

In the spirit of back-to-school, the September Geek Dinner will feature local EdTech startup STEM2O.

Providence-based STEM2O builds simple but powerful, standards-aligned simulation authoring tools that help teachers re-kindle students’ interest in math and science. With STEM2O, teachers can easily build interactive simulations that demonstrate complex science and math concepts like figuring out how a pendulum would swing on Mars, or finding the liquid density required to make iron float.

On Wednesday Co-Founder & CEO Rushikesh Bandekar will tell the STEM2O story and give a sneak peek at their impressive simulation platform.

JavaScript Verification: From Browsers to Pages

Modern web browsers implement a "private browsing" mode that is intended to leave behind no traces of a user's browsing activity on their computer. This feature is in direct tension with support for *extensions*, which let users add third-party functionality into their browser. I will discuss the scope of this problem, present our approach to verifying extensions' compliance with private browsing mode, and sketch our findings on several real, third-party extensions. I will then briefly describe the toolkit underlying our approach, and end with a sketch of a newer project, adapting this approach to the very different-seeming problem of statically catching errors when using the jQuery library.

Bio: Benjamin Lerner is a post-doctoral researcher in the PLT group at Brown University, and soon to be a lecturer at Northeastern University. His research examines the challenges of analyzing client-side web programming, from the behavior of web pages down through the semantics of the browser. He received a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Washington in 2011, building a platform to analyze conflicts between browser extensions, and a B.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics from Yale University. Food and beverages will be provided by our host and sponsor, Swipely!

How can you build a WordPress site that loads in less than a second, and why does it matter?

At Google, a 500 millisecond delay (just 0.5 seconds) resulted in a 20% decrease in search traffic. 74% of mobile web users will leave a site if it takes longer than 5 seconds to load. Meanwhile, web-enabled devices and user bandwidth are getting more varied and less predictable. In this talk, Chris Ferdinandi shares tips and techniques that will dramatically increase your site performance.

Chris Ferdinandi is a web designer and front-end developer in Franklin, MA. Chris is responsible for learning innovation and technology at EMC Corporation, a Fortune 200 tech firm. He's also the web developer for PAWS New England, a fantastic animal rescue organization. He's a beach bum from Rhode Island, and currently lives south of Boston with his wife, two dogs, and one dog-like cat.
