Code & Coffee (Bring Laptop!)

Do you like coding with friends? Like really great coffee? Come out to GDI's Code & Coffee!

Code and Coffee is an opportunity for you to work on your own projects, continue practicing what you've been learning, and meet others who share your interests. Bring your laptop, your recent projects, and your programming problems and questions.

This is also a great event for first time attendees who just want to socialize or find out more about coding in general. We're very friendly and would love to have you join us. :)

If you have a project idea and some skills, but haven’t attended a GDI event yet? Want to focus on helping others with their projects? You're welcome too!

Don't worry if you don't have a project already started. This could be an opportunity to find one.

As a group, we’ll hold each other accountable for completing our projects, and provide on-going support and feedback.

We know that it can be intimidating to come to a meet-up when you don't know anyone, so please feel free to reach out if you have any questions! : )

Feel free to come by for the whole thing or drop in when you have time.

Don't forget to bring your laptop and charger if you have one!

All attendees are expected to abide by the Girl Develop It code of conduct

Providence Geeks

PVD Geeks Featuring Dell Technologies

("Better lighting at Providence Station for tracks 3 and 5." by kd1s on Flickr, CC BY-NC-SA)

At the December 2018 Providence Geeks, members of Dell Technologies' Systems Engineering Team (based in nearby Franklin, MA) will be discussing Dell Technologies' vision of becoming the essential infrastructure company, from the edge to the data center to the cloud, not only for today's applications but for the cloud-native world we're entering. The team will also be covering company culture, projects they have worked on, and will tell you how someone can become a part of Dell Technologies (they're hiring!). Joining us will be Systems Engineers Carissa Willard, a Massachusetts native with 10 years experience in information Systems; David Howes, a Massachusetts resident with previous experience in Software Development and Computer Science Engineering; and Jason Silvia, a Providence, RI native with previous experience in Information Systems Support. Along with the engineers, Systems Engineering Manager Emilio Santomarco will also be joining us.

On September 7, 2016, Dell and EMC joined forces in the largest technology merger in history to become Dell Technologies. Dell Technologies unites seven technology leaders – Dell, DellEMC, Pivotal, RSA, Secureworks, Virtustream and VMware – in one company with the goal of developing technology to transform lives, and power human progress. Dell Technologies' connection to Rhode Island (and all of New England) is through DellEMC (formerly EMC), which was founded in 1979 in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. Since that year, DellEMC has been a mainstay of not just New England, but the Global IT landscape, especially in the data storage and management space.

The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant. Doors open at 5:30pm. Socializing, eating and drinking up until the 15-minute presentation/Q&A around 6:30. Afterwards, back to socializing, eating, drinking. It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whomever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional.

Learn With OSMM: Needlefelting with Cookie Cutters

Have some last minute holiday decorating to do? We have the class for you - try your hand at needlefelting!

Needlefelting is the process of using a barbed needle to interlock wool fibers, allowing creation of either 2D or 3D shapes. In this class, you'll learn to needlefelt gingerbreads using cookie cutters. The cookie cutters help to keep shapes consistent - perfect for ornaments, gift toppers, garlands and more. You'll go home with your wool gingerbread creation, as well as your very own 3d printed gingerbread cookie cutter for more needlefelting or baking fun later!

Ages 10 to adult are welcome for the class. The needles are very sharp - younger participants must have an adult present, and patience and an awareness of tool safety is important.

We have beautiful wool to work with, some donated by our friends at Old Slater Mill Association and M. Dursin & Sons, Inc.!

Tickets are $20 per person in advance through Eventbrite. OSMM members tickets available for $10 with promo code.
