Providence Geeks

June 2017 Providence Geeks

("Providence" photo by lpgeffen on Flickr, CC-BY-NC.) Looking Glass is a startup based in Providence, Hong Kong and Brooklyn that is making the sci-fi dream of the hologram into reality. At the June 2017 Providence Geeks, Looking Glass CTO Alex Hornstein will present a few new prototypes of midair display and interaction technology that the company is working on. The first one is a low-cost DIY system that anyone can build at home and allows 2D midair display and interaction. You'll also get to play with a nascent higher-end system that does full 3D display and interaction. Alex will share the weirdo sorcery that makes the displays work, explain the unexplored challenges with midair interaction, and talk about what we talk about when we talk about holograms. The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant. Doors open at 5:30pm. Socializing, eating and drinking up until the 15 min presentation/q&a around 6:30. Afterwards, back to socializing, eating, drinking. It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whomever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities (that’s not to say the food isn’t good – it’s actually great). Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about start-ups, new devices, innovative business models, 3d printing, interaction design, social computing, digital art, web services, and more! There is Wi-Fi so bring your connected device of choice.

Modern Security Architecture with OpenID Connect

Modern applications require modern security and the OpenID Connect and OAuth2 security protocols are designed to meet this need. To achieve a modern security architecture you must then use something called a “security token service” that implements these protocols. In this session we will look at how applications are now architected to incorporate and use a token service for authentication thus providing single sign-on. We will also see how this same token service also provides tokens for securing Web APIs.

Drupal Providence

DrupalPVD Meetup

Our monthly Drupal Providence Meetup is coming up! This year we’re introducing a NEW format featuring a Module of the Month series and Tip of the Month. Join us as we level up at the Drupal PVD Meetup each month beginning at 6 pm, and bring a friend!

The NEW general format goes something like this:

6:30 pm - Module of the Month

Have you mastered a Module and want to demo it for the group? Is there a Module you want to learn more about that we can present? Let us know. Each month we will review/demo a module to kick off the meeting. Stay tuned for this month’s Module!

6:45 pm - Tip of the Month

Each month we will have a helpful tech tip (not necessarily always Drupal) to improve the way you build sites. We would love some group participation so if you have a tip to share, let us know and we’ll give you the floor.

7:00 pm – Feature Presentation

This month, Drupal PVD's will feature a speaker talking about the latest in the world of Drupal.

7:30 pm (or so) - Networking and Social Time

Networking and one-on-one Q&A are valuable aspects of the meetup. Do you have an issue that’s stumping you? Let us know anytime and we can connect you with someone who can help, or even make it a topic at the next meetup.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own synths, modules and racks. Headphones are encouraged, but we’ll also have a PA system available for a wider audio experience.

Ocean State Maker Mill is a membership-run organization with the mission of helping encourage the usage of arts, engineering, and science to help make ideas become reality. We provide a workshop for our members to build their dreams, and an educational space for the greater New England community to learn new skills. NodeJs, IoT and Azure Functions

James Sturtevant from Microsoft Presents:

NodeJs, IoT and Azure Functions
IoT and Serverless are two very hot topics right now. Come learn how these two areas come together so that you can build scalable systems in a fast modular way. We will see how small, single purpose functions using Node.js can fit into an IoT architecture enabling you to be flexible as you design the system. We will see what features Azure has to offer for IoT for a Node.js developer and then look at where Azure Functions using node.js fit into the picture to provide functionality like alerts, device management, and Cloud to Device communication.

James (@aspenwilder) works for Microsoft where he partners with developers to explore the latest technologies for the web and IoT. Prior to Microsoft, he worked in the web development space for 10+ years working with startups and enterprises to improve the way they do business through technology. James is a regular speaker at local and national conferences and blogs at jamessturtevant.com. When he isn’t practicing his software craft James can be found running through the woods, climbing mountains, or hiking with his daughters.

May 2017 Providence Geeks

("RI State House" photo by el_ramon on Flickr, CC BY-NC-SA.) At the May 2017 Providence Geeks, we're joined by Annette Tonti of The Innovation Scout. The Innovation Scout helps corporations to find growth opportunities by matching them with startups and other open innovation. Their matching engine uses patent protected machine learning and big data methodologies. Businesses use the platform to learn about, follow, or interact with startups and other IP. They uncover a relationship potential between the corporation and startups that would be difficult to find otherwise so that corporations know they are not missing any new threats or opportunities. The Innovation Scout's customers get knowledge that would be impossible to get by using their human networks alone; machine learning finds new innovation and a pathway to growth based on continuous open innovation. The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant. Doors open at 5:30pm.
