Family Night at PVD Geeks

["Bridge above the Blackstone River": jeffcutler on Flickr, CC BY-NC-SA 2.0] With summer here, it's time for a family-friendly version of Providence Geeks. We'll have hands-on demos with electronics, 3D design, and will also have 3D printers and other machines on hand making cool stuff.

The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant. Doors open at 5:30pm. Socializing, eating and drinking up until the 15 min presentation/q&a around 6:30. Afterwards, back to socializing, eating, drinking.

It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whomever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities (that’s not to say the food isn’t good – it’s actually great).

Bug Bounties!

With Upserve's Bryan Brannigan! Bug bounties are a marketplace and like all marketplaces, there are good sellers (researchers) and buyers (programs), and there bad sellers and buyers. There are resources everywhere to help researchers get going in this exciting world of bug hunting, but there are few resources available to help those running programs. But it is far worse to be a bad program than it is to be a bad researcher. Let's have a conversation about how Upserve went from no bounty program to launching a public program (and beyond!). We'll talk about the speedbumps and the lessons learned along the way. And you'll learn about how managing a successful bug bounty program is more about managing expectations and clear communication then it is about fixing security bugs.

DrupalPVD Meetup

Our monthly Drupal Providence Meetup is coming up! This year we’re introducing a NEW format featuring a Module of the Month series and Tip of the Month. Join us as we level up at the Drupal PVD Meetup each month beginning at 6 pm, and bring a friend!

The NEW general format goes something like this:

6:30 pm - Module of the Month

Have you mastered a Module and want to demo it for the group? Is there a Module you want to learn more about that we can present? Let us know. Each month we will review/demo a module to kick off the meeting. Stay tuned for this month’s Module!

6:45 pm - Tip of the Month

Each month we will have a helpful tech tip (not necessarily always Drupal) to improve the way you build sites. We would love some group participation so if you have a tip to share, let us know and we’ll give you the floor.

7:00 pm – Feature Presentation

This month, Drupal PVD's will feature a speaker talking about the latest in the world of Drupal.

7:30 pm (or so) - Networking and Social Time

Networking and one-on-one Q&A are valuable aspects of the meetup. Do you have an issue that’s stumping you? Let us know anytime and we can connect you with someone who can help, or even make it a topic at the next meetup.

Code & Coffee (Bring Laptop!)

Do you like coding with friends? Like really great coffee? Come out to GDI's Code & Coffee!

Code and Coffee is an opportunity for you to work on your own projects, continue practicing what you've been learning, and meet others who share your interests. Bring your laptop, your recent projects, and your programming problems and questions.

This is also a great event for first time attendees who just want to socialize or find out more about coding in general. We're very friendly and would love to have you join us. :)

If you have a project idea and some skills, but haven’t attended a GDI event yet? Want to focus on helping others with their projects? You're welcome too!

Don't worry if you don't have a project already started. This could be an opportunity to find one.

As a group, we’ll hold each other accountable for completing our projects, and provide on-going support and feedback.

We know that it can be intimidating to come to a meet-up when you don't know anyone, so please feel free to reach out if you have any questions! : )

Feel free to come by for the whole thing or drop in when you have time.

Don't forget to bring your laptop and charger if you have one!

All attendees are expected to abide by the Girl Develop It code of conduct

Since its establishment, Millennium has relentlessly focused on unwavering integrity while perfecting the recruitment of subject matter experts for complex, mission critical projects. For more than 20 years, their approach remains unchanged: sweeping analysis of their clients’ staffing initiatives and organizational culture, combined with a personal approach to long-term relationship building to identify the most impactful talent.

Jamie K. Hansen, Director of Talent Outreach at Millennium Consulting, was born and raised in Rhode Island, and holds her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Rhode Island. She has been with Millennium professionally for 4 years, but has had a front row seat in watching the company grow over the past two decades. At this month's Providence Geeks, she will tell the story of Millennium's beginnings, share what they are working on now, and give us some insights into what the future of Millennium may look like.

Drupal 8 Translation - A Live Demo

Join us as John Picozzi, Senior Drupal Architect at Oomph, Inc, presents his DrupalCon presentation on translations with Drupal 8.

This live demo will be something of a working session where we will use a local Drupal environment to show the following three things:

- How to get Drupal Multilingual setup from a basic Drupal 8 Install
- How to translate Items using Drupal’s built-in Translation System.
- How to integrate with a translation service like Lingotek to do easy machine translation

To participate with this talk you should have the following:

Whatever local environment you want (MAMP, Vagrant, etc)
- A base Drupal install built with Drupal Composer
- If you're more comfortable using Drush feel free!
- A basic knowledge of Drupal 8 and how to install modules via Composer

The above are not needed if you just want to come, watch and ask questions. However, if you would like to leave with a fully working (hopefully) translation demo you can show your friends, come prepared!

Food and beverages will be available for all attendees.
