The NEW general format goes something like this:

6:30 pm - Module of the Month

6:45 pm - Tip of the Month

Each month we will have a helpful tech tip (not necessarily always Drupal) to improve the way you build sites. We would love some group participation so if you have a tip to share, let us know and we’ll give you the floor.

7:00 pm – Feature Presentation

This month, Drupal PVD's will feature a speaker talking about the latest in the world of Drupal.

7:30 pm (or so) - Networking and Social Time

Networking and one-on-one Q&A are valuable aspects of the meetup. Do you have an issue that’s stumping you? Let us know anytime and we can connect you with someone who can help, or even make it a topic at the next meetup.

A JavaScript Stack to Build On: Intersecting UX and DX

Owen Buckley from Kenzan Presents:
The front-end landscape has changed dramatically over the past couple years since the release of the latest EMCAScript specification in 2015 which has brought a new sense of maturity to JavaScript, in particular with the introduction of two key features; modules and classes. This has led to a proliferation of great tools, libraries, and frameworks that have helped to accelerate the development of frontend applications, but has also made decision-making more challenging. In this presentation, we will examine how a stack focusing on Yarn for package management, webpack for application bundling, and TypeScript for writing our application’s source code can give developers and organizations the building blocks to write more maintainable and optimized applications. This has a positive impact not just on user experiences, but can also make for more frictionless and streamlined development experiences as well, thus ensuring the focus of development is on the application, and not the infrastructure.

July 2017 Providence Geeks

("Providence Place" photo by el_ramon on Flickr, CC BY-NC-SA.) At the July Providence Geeks, Rhode Island Museum of Science & Art (RIMOSA) Founder and Executive Director Bonnie Epstein will join us to talk about the museum. Many of you have seen RIMOSA’s pop-up exhibits at WaterFire, RI Mini Maker Faire, Foo Fest, Providence Children’s Film Festival and other events. On June 10, RIMOSA officially opened the doors of their new west end site at 763 Westminster Street. Come and learn about RIMOSA’s past, present, and future, and experience a few of the hands-on experiences they are known for. This will be a kid-friendly evening. The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant. Doors open at 5:30pm. Socializing, eating and drinking up until the 15 min presentation/q&a around 6:30. Afterwards, back to socializing, eating, drinking. It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whomever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities (that’s not to say the food isn’t good – it’s actually great). Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about start-ups, new devices, innovative business models, 3d printing, interaction design, social computing, digital art, web services, and more! There is Wi-Fi so bring your connected device of choice.

Book Club: Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future

For this book club meet up,  we will be reading Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future by Martin Ford.

Description:

"What are the jobs of the future? How many will there be? And who will have them? We might imagine—and hope—that today's industrial revolution will unfold like the last: even as some jobs are eliminated, more will be created to deal with the new innovations of a new era. In Rise of the Robots, Silicon Valley entrepreneur Martin Ford argues that this is absolutely not the case. As technology continues to accelerate and machines begin taking care of themselves, fewer people will be necessary. Artificial intelligence is already well on its way to making “good jobs” obsolete: many paralegals, journalists, office workers, and even computer programmers are poised to be replaced by robots and smart software. As progress continues, blue and white collar jobs alike will evaporate, squeezing working- and middle-class families ever further. At the same time, households are under assault from exploding costs, especially from the two major industries—education and health care—that, so far, have not been transformed by information technology. The result could well be massive unemployment and inequality as well as the implosion of the consumer economy itself.

In Rise of the Robots, Ford details what machine intelligence and robotics can accomplish, and implores employers, scholars, and policy makers alike to face the implications. The past solutions to technological disruption, especially more training and education, aren't going to work, and we must decide, now, whether the future will see broad-based prosperity or catastrophic levels of inequality and economic insecurity. Rise of the Robots is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand what accelerating technology means for their own economic prospects—not to mention those of their children—as well as for society as a whole"

------------------------------------------------------------------

Pick up the book and come by to share your own experiences, ask questions, and discuss the things you learned.
