Providence Geeks

Mobile Maker Lab at PVD Geeks

Powered by IYRS, Polaris MEP, Rhode Island College, RI Commerce Corp & RI Department of Labor and Training, the Rhode Island Mobile Maker Lab provides students, educators, manufacturers & others access to the latest in advanced manufacturing & automation technologies. Join us in welcoming the Lab to this month's Providence Geeks. Seth Wiseman, designer & development manager for the lab, will share the story of the lab: from its origins through execution, and on to the future of the project. The event itself is FREE! Beverages and food are for sale at AS220’s excellent bar and restaurant. Doors open at 5:30pm. Socializing, eating and drinking up until the 15 min presentation/q&a around 6:30. Afterwards, back to socializing, eating, drinking. It’s totally casual. Wear whatever, bring whomever, arrive and take off whenever! And don’t worry about eating or not – come famished or full – eating is optional, and frankly, the least of the festivities (that’s not to say the food isn’t good – it’s actually great). Topics of conversation will vary as they will at any gathering of geeks, but many of us will be talking about start-ups, new devices, innovative business models, 3d printing, interaction design, social computing, digital art, web services, and more! There is Wi-Fi so bring your connected device of choice.

Our monthly Drupal Providence Meetup is coming up! This year we’re introducing a NEW format featuring a Module of the Month series and Tip of the Month. Join us as we level up at the Drupal PVD Meetup each month beginning at 6 pm, and bring a friend!

The NEW general format goes something like this:

6:30 pm - Module of the Month

6:45 pm - Tip of the Month

Each month we will have a helpful tech tip (not necessarily always Drupal) to improve the way you build sites. We would love some group participation so if you have a tip to share, let us know and we’ll give you the floor.

This month, Drupal PVD's will feature a speaker talking about the latest in the world of Drupal.

7:30 pm (or so) - Networking and Social Time

Synth Saturday at OSMM!

Ocean State Maker Mill is hosting our October synthesizer meetup from noon until 6:00 PM on Saturday October 14 at our newly-expanded makerspace in Pawtucket, RI. Whether you’re an experienced electronic musician, or are just curious about what this whole ‘modular synthesis/Eurorack’ thing is about, this is the perfect chance to gather with fellow New England synth nerds. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own synths, modules and racks. Headphones are encouraged, but we’ll also have a PA system available for a wider audio experience.

Ocean State Maker Mill is a membership-run organization with the mission of helping encourage the usage of arts, engineering, and science to help make ideas become reality. We provide a workshop for our members to build their dreams, and an educational space for the greater New England community to learn new skills. We are located at 80 Fountain Street in Pawtucket, RI.

September 2017 PVD Geeks

Many of you know Mary Johnson from the Rhode Island Mini Maker Faire or her efforts to get robots into the hands of kids and their families through the FIRST LEGO League and the Robot Block Party. She's also a program manager with Polaris MEP, Rhode Island's Manufacturer Extension Partnership, where she works at the intersection of innovation, design, and manufacturing. At the September 2017 Providence Geeks, Mary will share the work Polaris MEP is doing to increase collaboration among Rhode Island designers, inventors, makers and manufacturers. Faster Tied Together: Bundling Your App with webpack

Owen Buckley from Kenzan continues with the next installment of his excellent series on JavaScript stacks:

Frontend applications, as with JavaScript itself, have also matured over the years. Frameworks and libraries like Angular and React, coupled with better and faster browsers, have changed what is possible and expected from a website, which we have now started to categorize as web applications. The mixing and organization of an application’s source code (as static assets like HTML / CSS / JavaScript, images and fonts) now requires complex orchestrations that have started to push the limits of what task runner tools like Grunt and Gulp can do for us without requiring a lot of configuration, setup, and maintenance on the developer’s end. Webpack aims to solve this problem directly by providing a build framework / paradigm specifically designed for taking a web application and all its assets and generating an optimized, production ready bundle. In addition, webpack plays well with all the popular web development tools, libraries, and frameworks out there. All of this comes together to helps reduce maintenance and complexity to application maintainers and lets the focus be on the development of the application itself.
